Foldable scissor-like structures are gaining popularity across various engineering domains owing to their rapid deployability and reconfigurability. However, the repetitive folded motion induces fatigue damage over time. This study aims to enhance the durability of scissor structures through shape optimization. Conventional scissor designs utilize identical cross-section shapes for all members. While this simplicity enables foldability, it leads to stress concentration at the hinged joints during loading. We propose altering the shapes to Dumbbell forms which provide more material around high-strain areas. Finite element simulations were performed to evaluate two concept frames under equal loads - one with a uniform square section, and one with Dumbbell ends. The modified topology increased the maximum sustainable load by over ۱۵% compared to the baseline, demonstrating significantly improved structural integrity. This reshaping converts the kinematically indeterminate system into a determinate truss, eliminating instability risks. The expanded area moments also enhanced stiffness and buckling resistance despite the negligible mass increase. In conclusion, optimizing the scissor element shapes can greatly enhance strength, service life, and reliability without compromising foldability. The proposed technique provides a tool for designing durable, high-performance deployable structures suited for aerospace and temporary infrastructure applications.
