چکیده مقاله:

Schizophrenia is a chronic and heterogeneous neurological disease that involves three groups of symptoms: positive symptoms, negative symptoms, and cognitive symptoms. These symptoms are sometimes associated with depression. Gallic acid (GA) as a phenolic acid has been reported to possess several psychopharmacological activities. These activities are attributed to the antioxidant GA potential. The limited stability and low bioavailability of this substance have hindered its therapeutic applications.Carrageenan (CRG) is a type of natural sulfated polysaccharide that increases its bioavailability by binding to drugs and modifying chemical structure. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of the gallic acid-carrageenan conjugate on ketamine-depressive-like behaviors in mice models of schizophrenia.Mice were divided into ۵ groups including control, positive control, patient, and ۲ treatment groupsThe patient group and two treatment groups were administered intraperitoneal ketamine at a concentration of ۲۰ mg/kg for a duration of ۱۴ days. Two treatment groups received GA and GA-CG orally at a concentration of ۲۰ mg/kg two hours after receiving ketamine. Also, the positive control group only received carrageenan gallic acid conjugate orally for ۱۴ days. forced swimming test (FST) was used to evaluate depressive-like behaviors.Ketamine treatment in the disease and gallic acid group increased (P <۰.۰۰۱) significantly the immobility index compared to the control group. On the other hand, the gallic acid-Carrageenan conjugate treatment decreased (P <۰.۰۰۱) and (P <۰.۰۱) significantly in this indicator compared to the disease and gallic acid group.Based on our research findings, it has been suggested that carrageenan can enhance the bioavailability of gallic acid's antioxidant properties through its drug delivery system properties. As a result, it may have the potential to improve depressive-like behaviors in animal models of schizophrenia
