Nurses Knowledge and Attitude toward Pain Relief in Cancer Children: A Cross-Sectional Study

Background and Objectives: Nurses can play effective role in alleviating the pain of cancer children by applying the right measures. This study was conducted to survey the knowledge and attitude of the nurses regarding pain relief care in children with cancer. Methods and Materials: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study that was conducted to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of 120 nurses in 17-Shahrivar hospital of Guilan University of Medical Sciences. The data were collected through a demographic questionnaire, pain assessment methods and attitude in relation to pain relief methods. Data collected were analyzed using chi-square, t-test, and Pearson correlation coefficient and SPSS statistical software. Results: The results of the present study showed that the majority of nurses were in the age group of 25-35 years old and were married and had not passed any training about pain relief. 75% of nurses had average knowledge. Also, 85.4% of nurses had a positive attitude in reducing pain. There was a statistically significant relationship between knowledge and attitude (R = 0/05). Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that nurses do not have sufficient knowledgeabout pain relief methods for cancer children and have not participated in any in-service training classes regarding pain relief methods.
