Applying Critical Discourse Analysis in English to Persian Translation; A Study of the Influence of Transmission of Ideology on Translation

چکیده

Adopting Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) with specific emphasis on Fairclough’s (1989) framework, the present study aims to investigate the use of discourse-based approach in translation, especially from English to Persian, in general, and in particular, the influence of transmission of ideology on translation. Discourse- based approach, in terms of critical perspective, considers not only linguistic features of a text, but also its hidden parts including social and situational context, ideology, and power relations. In this regard, under the assumption of insufficiency of text-based approach depending on substituting lexical and grammatical equivalences, we analyzed and translated some contemporary English texts into Persian based on CDA.The findings of our documentary and analytical study showed that using discourse- based approach and considering ideology through the process of translation, a translator can make a better translation compared with using text-based approach and neglecting ideology. Also, we found that such an approach gives a comprehensive understanding of the text to the translator. The results proved our assumption and the fact that applying CDA for analysis of Source Text (ST) and Target Text (TT) and translation from Source Language (SL) into Target Language (TL) helps the translator to achieve a good result.
