Over the past few decades, energy storage systems (ESSs) have been considered with varying motives to improve the performance of power systems. Despite the abundant provision of many services, energy storage systems are still new equipment that their main feature is high investment cost. One of the methods to justify the high cost of this equipment is simultaneous using of all technical and economic advantages of utilizing the storage. This can be achieved by using an optimal plan to invest in energy storage systems. In this paper, a comprehensive planning framework is introduced for ascertaining the most cost effective siting and sizing of ESSs that maximize their benefits in distribution networks. This model reduces network operation costs and purchasing electricity by utilizing the difference in electricity prices at different times, network upgrade deferment and loss reduction. The proposed model is implemented on the IEEE 33-bus network using the GAMS software. The obtained results confirm the accuracy of the proposed model for determining the optimal capacity and location of energy storage systems.
