Effects of omega3 in obese children

Introduction: Obesity is one of the most prevalent and serious health problems for children and adolescents. Obese children are at high risk of remaining overweight in adulthood and of developing chronic cardiovascular diseases. The development of cardiovascular diseases involves various factors such as hypertension, insulin resistance, altered lipid profile, and impairment of cardiac autonomic control. In recent studies, omega-3 fatty acids had a positive effect on these factors. The aim of this study is evaluate the effect of omega 3 supplementation in obese children. Methods: This study is a review which data were collected by searching keywords from electronicsources. We searched for relevant articles published up to December2019 through PubMed and Embase. For this purpose, we used keywords including the following: omega 3, obesity, children. Results: Several studies have been conducted to evaluate the effect of different doses of omega-3 fatty acid supplementation on various metabolic factors in overweight and obese children and in some of them beneficial effect of omega 3 were observed. Omega 3 in obese children and adolescents may favorably affect cardiovascular health, affect childhood obesity by improving the blood levels of some important vascular dysfunction biomarkers, and it has benefit not only for thealleviation of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but also for the prevention of severe complications such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Also it can reduce the increased values of the interventricular septum, the atherosclerotic risk, inflammation and insulin resistance. Therefore, it seems that omega-3 supplementation is safe . Conclusion: Omega-3 fatty acid supplementation may be a low-cost intervention with few side effects for obese children and adolescents and importan in the prevention and control of child and adolescent obesity and associated diseases.
