Low birth weight prevalence and human development index (HDI) in Asia: An ecological study 2018

Introduction: Low birth weight (LBW) is a major public health concern and one of the risk factors associated with mortality of preterm infants. The aim of this study is to investigate the association between low birth weight and human development index in the Asian continent. Methods: This is a descriptive-analytical study based on data extracted from low birth weight prevalence released by World Health Organization in 2015. Data analysis was conducted using correlation and regression tests to evaluate the association between the low birth weight and HDI. The statistical analysis was carried out by Stata-14 and the significance level was estimated at P<0.05. Results: The global prevalence of low birth weight was 14.6% in 2015, down from 17.5% in 2000. The highest prevalence of low birth weight in 2000 (33.1%) and 2015 (27%) was recorded in SouthAsia. Accordingly, the highest incidence of low birth weight during 2005-2015 period was observed in Bangladesh, Nepal, Jordan and Maldives, respectively. Results exhibited a significant negative correlation between low birth weight and HDI (R = -0.504, P <0.05). Conclusion: Since the results of the study demonstrate a negative correlation between HDI and low birth weight prevalence, the analysis of factors influencing low birth weight in these countries can help reduce the low birth weight prevalence.
