چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Given the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in children and despite numerous studies, its treatment is still one of the most challenging areas of psychiatry. On the other hand, according to this multifactorial disorder and the lack of accurate cognition its etiology , today considerable research has been done to investigate the role of environmental factors, especially nutritional agents, in the process of ADHD . This study was designed to evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation that was deficient nutritional agent as supplemental treatment with methylphenidate. Methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study as a double blind randomized clinical trial, children with ADHD were randomly assigned into two groups of 40 A and B each. Group A received methylphenidate and placebo and group Bmethylphenidate with fortified milk with vitamin D daily received 100% RDA (Cale’s Manufacturing, 500ml daily) and all children were treated for 6 weeks. For all children, the Parent Conner’s Questionnaire was completed before and after the intervention . Results: Of the 40 children in the case group, 31 were boys and 9 were girls, and of the 40 children in the control group, 28 were boys and 12 were girls. The mean age of children receiving methylphenidate with placebo was 9.3 ± 1.38 years and children treated with methylphenidate and vitamin D fortified milk were 8.87 ± 1.97 years. Statistical results based on paired t-test for intra-group effects showed a significant difference between the two groups (P-value = 0.001). Conclusion: Milk fortified with vitamin D along with medication is a good option in controlling ADHD in children.
