Taurine, conditionally essential amino acid and a substrate of bile salts, has several protective effects in most organs against different toxins including natural or synthetics. Since the liver has essential functions to the metabolism of many xenobiotics such as drugs, toxins, chemical agents and heavy metals, hepatotoxicity is a common outcome due to exposure of them or their metabolites. The evidence of several in vivo and in vitro studies shows the protective effect of taurine against drugs and toxins, which are induced hepatotoxicity in animal models.According to the literature, the mechanisms of beneficial taurine influence in the liver involve the inhibition of oxidative stress and inflammation, conjugation with bile acids, cell membrane stabilizing as well as moderate hepatic GSH content, to suppress the activated CYP2E1, chelating and free-radical scavenging, which are related to its anti-apoptotic, antioxidant, osmoregulatory and structural properties. Therefore, this review summarizes the mechanisms of the protective effect of taurine against some drugs, toxins and heavy metals, which are cause liver pathophysiology.
