Errors Associated with Digital Preview of Computer-Engineered Complete Dentures

Background and Objective: Computer-engineered complete dentures (CECDs) have been becoming point of interest in recent years. The advantages of CECDs include lower numbers of visits, higher fitness and retention, and electronic archiving. Fabrication of CECDs involves scan of records, digital design, and fabrication. Digital designing can be performed in the office or dental laboratory. Dentists should evaluate and approve digital previews prior to manufacturing.Main reported complications associated with CECDs are patient dissatisfaction (in case of lack of a trial placement appointment) and lack of retention. This article identifies errors that occur when CECDs are previewed digitally and proposes guidelines and a checklist to reduce complications such as insufficient esthetics, misaligned occlusal plan, poor tooth set up, and inappropriate denture base characteristics.Search Method:A search was conducted using the databases such as Medline or PubMed and Google Scholar for articles from 2015 to 2018. The selected key words were computer-engineered complete dentures (CECDs), complete denture, 3-dimensional, CAD-CAM-fabricated complete dentures. This article provides a summary of the findings from studies that present errors of CEDs.Finding:Review of articles revealed that common complications include dissatisfaction with overall outcome, inadequate retention, and esthetic concerns. Quality assessment factors that were used to report complications were identified.Conclusion:Although computer designing of complete denture omits human errors and facilitate the process of fabrication, but digital workflow has its own drawbacks and therefore care and some additional appointments are needed
