A Comparative Study Between Immediate and Conventional Implant Loading

Background and Objective: Early and immediate implant loading protocols have become popular in recent years. Immediate loading was defined as an implant put in function within 1 week after its placement. This type of implant loading protocol has been proposed to reduce the time interval between implant surgery and the delivery of the prosthetic rehabilitation with the objective of improving patient comfort and satisfaction. It has gained widespread popularity because of its advantages in shortening treatment duration and improving esthetics and patient acceptance. Although, it is still unclear whether immediate loading can achieve clinical outcomes comparable with those of early or conventional delayed loading. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the efficacy of immediate implant loading compared to conventional loading.Materials and Methods: An electronic search of PubMed (Medline) database, for relevant articles (the application of immediate implant and conventional loading) was performed.Finding: It is generally concluded that immediate loading appeared to have a higher risk of implant failure than delayed loading. On the other hand, both achieved similar implant survival rates and marginal bone level change. However, immediate loading showed a clear advantage in terms of patient s preference, due to improved function and comfort.Conclusion: There is a controversy and a great debate on the efficacy of immediate implant loading compared to conventional loading. This is the author s interest in investigate in this field. The present review research will highlight the clinical and histometric outcomes of introducing immediate and early implant loading.
