چکیده

Background and Objective: The aim of this paper is to compare the survival rates and complication of short dental implants (5 to 8 mm) that have been increasingly used recently to using long implants (> 8 mm) in combination with sinus lifting which is more common and older method .Search methods: This review has been done by Searching in electronic data bases including PubMed and Scopus with these key words dental implant , short implant , bone augmentation and, sinus lifting .Finding: Placement of implant in the maxillary edentulous area is a challenging object because of the lack of enough bone height and expansion of sinus space. These have led to the development of bone augmentation techniques and sinus floor elevation procedure. In the posterior maxilla, sinus elevation procedures were for long considered to be the gold standard using various bone substitute materials and rendering high implant survival rates but using of this methods needs high level of surgical skill and have complication associated with, such as membrane perforation, hemorrhage, and infection. In recent years, dental implant diameters and length decreased. This shift was supported by the development of more favorable surface structure. In addition, patient demands for more minimally surgical procedures, fewer complications, less treatment time, lower treatment costs have resulted using implants with reduced dimensions, in both diameter and length. Short dental implants were defined as an implant with a length of ≤8 mm installed in the maxilla or in the mandible. These implants were predominantly introduced and used for circumventing more extensive primary bone augmentation procedures such as lateral sinus augmentation. The choice between one of these two options is based on a number of parameters, such as the surgical skill and experience of the surgeons, patient’s performance and, scientific evidence .Conclusion: Short dental implants as well as standard-length implants in combination with vertical bone augmentation procedures appear to result in predictable outcomes in terms of implant survival rates. But short implants provide number of advantage for patient and clinician
