Evaluation of nurses knowledge and attitude about palliative care for chemotherapy patients

چکیده

Background and Aim: Cancer is one of the most common chronic diseases that cause severe and prolonged pain in patients. Nurses, as members of the health care team, have an important responsibility to alleviate and relieve the pain of these patients by applying appropriate care. This study was performed to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of nurses regarding pain relief care in cancer patients.Methods: This descriptive-analytical study was conducted to evaluate the knowledge and attitude of 100 nurses for patients’ palliative care inchemotherapy ward in one of the hospitals in Yazd. The study tool was a questionnaire consisting of 72 questions and consisting of 3 sections:Personal information, pain assessment and control methods, and attitude assessment of each unit regarding pain relief methods. The collected data were analyzed using statistical tests and spss-21 software.Results: The findings of the study showed that only 20% of nurses have training related to pain relief. 70% of nurses had average knowledge and90% had positive attitude in reducing pain. There was a significant relationship between nurses knowledge and attitude. (P < 0.001, r = .691).Implications for practice: The findings of this study showed that nurses have moderate knowledge of pain relief methods and considering the positive attitude and importance of pain control in these patients, holding pain control courses and increasing the knowledge of nurses is very important.
