Survey the level of knowledge and need for surgical wound care education in nurses working in surgical wards of public hospitals in Tehran

Introduction: Nurses play a key role in providing quality health care services. Improving and preventing surgical wound infections is one of the concerns of the education system. Improving nurses knowledge of surgical wound care and providing appropriate training will lead to a significant reduction in postoperative infections. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the level of knowledge and need for surgical wound care education in nurses working in surgical wards of public hospitals in Tehran.Methods: In this study validated scientific articles indexed in ISI, PubMed, Scopus, Sid, Magiran databases using keywords ((Wound Infection, Nurses, Education)). The time range from 2012 to 2018 was used to select articles. There were 77 articles in which 53 articles were included in the study and then 36 articles were reviewed for titles, abstracts and full texts.Results: According to the studies 87.7% of nurses had a superficial knowledge of surgical wound infection control. In most of the half of the cases, the quality of care in most of the cases was relatively favorable (54.3%). There was no correlation between nurses knowledge and quality of nursing care about wound (p = 0.86 and r = 0.01).Conclusion: According to the results of this study, which indicates a relatively low level of knowledge of nurses about wound healing and control, education is necessary. Therefore, it is recommended that relevant authorities develop and implement training programs to improve or control wound infection.
