Multisensory Therapy in Cognitive Dysfunction

Background and Aim : Complementary alternative medicine modalities help to treat patients with cognitive dysfunctions such as Alzheimer s disease, dementia, Autism Spectrum disease (ASD), and etc. in many developed countries. We will review the effects of exposure to multisensory stimulation studies in humans and rodents has been repeatedly shown to affect multiple aspects of brain function, and is known to improve cognitive and behavioral outcomes after brain injuries. We will discuss further about ASD as a severe neurodevelopmental disorder which characterized by qualitative impairments in social behavior, communication and aberrant repetitive behaviors. As in animal models of autistic disorders, a major focus is the subjects mimic the social deficits; we will show that rats exposed prenatally to valproic acid show deficits in social deficits, tactile discriminations and startle reflex.
