PREVALENCE OF CANNABIS USE IN IRAN IN THE YEARS 1998-2019

Background and Aim : One of the main problems of human societies is addiction which takes the power of thought, creativity, effort and constructivism from humans. Cannabis is considered as the most widespread smuggling substance and the most commonly used substance in the world which, in addition to the danger of undeniable dependence and physical harm, causes severe psychological symptoms.Methods : The statistical population of this study was the all prevalence studies carried out in Iran over the 1998-2019. Data were collected using a library-based method from all researches in the areas of prevalence of cannabis abuse or drug abuse assessment in Iran and then analyzed.Results : The use of cannabis showed a downward trend from 15.6% in 1998 to 2.1% in 2019. This trend continued to decline and reach to 1.1 percent in 2004 and then to its lowest level in 2010. Afterword, the percentage of cannabis consumption suddenly and dramatically increased to 6.43% in 2011. This uptrend reached to its highest level of 11.9% in recent years, especially between 1998 to 2019, due to increased consumption of marijuana and grassConclusion : By evaluating the prevalence of cannabis use in last three decades, it can generally be concluded that the use of cannabis was significantly reduced from 2000s to 1980s. But in 2010s, its use was raised dramatically due to increased consumption of marijuana and grass again
