Neurodegenerative diseases have been associated with neurotransmitters dysfunction. Glutamate, the major stimulatory neurotransmitter in central nervous system, has been found to induce neuroinflammatory and demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS) via excessive free radicals generation. Recent studies showed that Nepeta binaludensis Jamzad has several pharmacological effects such as antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective properties. The aim of this study was evaluation of the protective effect of N. binaludensis extract on OLN-93 degeneration induced by glutamate.Methods:The cells were treated with N. binaludensis (50-200 μg/mL) and glutamate (8 mM) for 24h. Cell viability and the parameters of redox status including the levels of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), lipid peroxidation were measured using MTT, and fluorimetry assays, respectively.Results:All data demonstrated that extract of N. binaludensis remarkably increased cell viability following glutamate insult (p < 0.01). Cytoprotective potential of N. binaludensis also ameliorated ROS accumulation, lipid peroxidation and induced by glutamate.Conclusion:These data suggest that N. binaludensis oligoprotection potential by means of alleviating oxidative stress parameters. This show efficacy of N. binaludensis treatment in neurodegenerative disorders, such as MS, in future.
