چکیده

Introduction: Periodontal disease is an inflammatory condition that can be related to some systemic inflammatory diseases. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD),one the most common chronic inflammatory lung disease, can be related to periodontal disease. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation of periodontal parameters with severity of COPD. Materials and Methods: Fifty consecutive patients with stable COPD were enrolled in this cross- sectional study. The following parameters were evaluated: Spirometry, COPD assessment test (CAT), dyspnea score according to the modified medical research council (MMRC), and pulse oximetry. The oral hygiene and periodontal parameters (GI, PI, AL, PD) were evaluated by one dentist. Results: The mean age of the patients was 61.20 25.30 years and 32 patients (64%) were current smokers. The male/female ratio was 31/19. The mean forced expiratory volume in one second (FEV1) and CAT score were 52.72 17.40 percent predicted and 15.287.28, respectively. There were statistically significant negative correlations between FEV1 and AL (P< 0.001) and FEV1 and PI (P=0.03). Also, there were statistically positive correlations between CAT score and AL (P= 0.01) and PI (P=0.007). Additionally, there was statistically significant negative correlation between oxygen saturation and AL(P=0.2). We could not find correlations between MMRC and periodontal parameters. Conclusion: Our results showed that periodontal disease can be related with severity of disease in COPD patients. Early diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease in COPD patients is recommended.
