Mortality pattern according to autopsy findings among traffic accident victims in Semnan, province with the highest mortality from traffic accident in Iran

چکیده

Background: Traffic accidents are an important cause of traumatic death particularly in developing countries such as Iran. One of the most principal steps in prevention and control of traffic accident-related trauma and its deaths is having information about demographic characters of its victims and their cause of deaths. Our cross sectional study aimed to measure road traffic fatality rates and its trends in 2006 to 2015 in Semnan city, province with the highest mortality from traffic accident in Iran.Methods: In this cross-sectional study we collect data on all road traffic deaths in Semnan between 2006 and 2015 using records from the Legal Medicine Organization. Directly standardized mortality rates were calculated. Finally, the information was analyzed by descriptive statistics.Results: during the ten-year period of this study, 3889 people in Semnan city died from road traffic accidents. The age-adjusted mortality rate that caused by road traffic has decreased from 82.8 per 100,000 people in 2006 to 45.6 in 2015 in during the study period. There were significant differences in deaths rates between the males and females and between outside city and inside city roads. Most deaths occurred among people aged 15-34 (15%), men (82.7%), and urban residents (82.6%) and also in self-employed people.Conclusion: Despite the overall reduction trend, the road traffic fatality rate in Semnan province is still alarmingly high compared to national and global data. In addition, the female population shows increasing death rates. These findings can serve as a basis for health care professionals and policymakers to conduct preventive measures, especially during summer, and plan specifically for reducing fatalities in the female population.
