چکیده مقاله:

Background:Foreign body aspiration is one of the most important causes of mortality in children under the age of 5 years and is one of the medical emergencies and life threatening conditions. Despite the advances made in removing foreign bodies, according to the National Association for the Health Survey (NSA), 1.2 of deaths per a hundred thousand people are due to aspiration of foreign bodies. The aim of this study was to determine the relative frequency and clinical findings in children with foreign body aspiration in the Tabriz Children Hospital in the first six months of 2018. Methods:This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study and the required data were collected by referring to the case files of patients admitted with foreign body aspiration diagnosis in Tabriz Children s Hospital in the first half of 1397. Then sex, age, clinical findings, foreign body type, parental action type, time interval between aspiration and admission in hospital, length of hospitalization were evaluated.Results:48 cases of patients with foreign body aspiration referred to Tabriz Children s Hospital during the first half of 1397, of which 33 cases (64%) were male and 18 (35%) were female. The age range of patients ranged from 10 to 24 months was 20 (39%), between the ages of 2-4 years, were 18 cases (35%). The most important clinical finding in these patients was cough which was in 27 cases (52%) and cyanose with dyspnea apeared in 18 cases (35%).The most common foreign body was food aspirates, such as seeds, nuts and fruit kernels (41%), followed by coins 12 (23.5), and the most frequent visits to hospital was less than 24 hours after accident (49%). The average time of hospital stay was about 2 days; and in 9.8% patients the child s airway was manipulated by parents.Discussion:Considering that the main type of aspirated foreign body is food, one of the causes of this can be related to the activity of the baby while eating, such as talking, laughing, running. Therefore, parents should be trained to be more careful at the time of feeding and according to high curiosity of children they must be discouraged from playing with toys that have detachable parts. It is also suggested that training programs include social media sources for increasing awareness.
