Mobile apps for radiology to support physicians and residents: A systematic and practical review

Introduction: A mobile app is a software application developed specifically for use on small, wireless computing devices, such as smartphones and tablets. Medical smartphone applications are increasingly popular amongst doctors. Medical imaging plays a critical role in modern medicine.The aim of this study was to find, introduce, assess and determine key features of mobile apps created specifically for physicians and residents.Methods: major application stores include google play for Android and App store for iOS were searched. The following keywords were: radiology, radiation, x-ray(s), computed tomography/CT, magnetic resonance imaging/MRI. We use a convenient device for each one: Samsung Galaxy J7 SM with Android and iPhone 5 with iOS. In order to identify the features of mobile apps, the introduction of programs was studied, if its description was not sufficient, free apps were installed and key features were extracted. Non-English Apps were excluded.Results: 128 applications were identified. Ninety-six app were extracted from Google Play and thirty-two app were extracted from App Store. Obtained apps were categorized into three main categories based on their applications including: 1) educational and teaching apps, 2) guideline apps, 3) Tools apps. The educational apps have clinical goals. Guideline apps provide guides for image viewing, patient positioning for imaging and image interpreting. Tools apps, have several applications such as measurement, image viewing and several different issues.Conclusion: The results of this study indicate that mobile apps for radiology are useful tools for solving educational needs of medical students, residents and physicians. Smartphones and tablets offer new opportunities for educate and interpret radiology images. radiology mobile apps are a new field of study to find, introduce and develop several imaging applications include medical imaging for radiology technologists, residents and professionals with a wide range of applications. A large variety of radiology-related smartphone applications are available with many potential benefits.
