Saliva as a metabolic map in view point of the Iranian traditional medicine

Regarding to development of diagnostic test based on saliva and salivomics for diagnostic determinants of wide spectrum of disease as metabolic syndrome, it is necessary for clinicians to have a good knowledge about clinical manifestations of saliva in clinics. Method and material: In this literature research, a search was conducted in some ITM manuscripts from the 9th to the 19th century and recent manuscripts. Finally gathering data was compared and discussed. Findings: Studies have showed some relation between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and principles of ITM. According to this study mal digestion is the most important reason of MetS. Impaired digestion will ultimately cause production of abnormal humor which affects the function of organs. The effects of abnormal humors appear in all body fluids and waste materials such as quantity and quality of saliva. Conclusion: It seems that some factors that cause xerostomia or salivation in current studies can be described by ITM bases. In ITM, it is thought that any disturbance in digestion and humor production process, its affects, appear in saliva which may be in accordance with metabolic map of body in saliva. The clinical manifestations of humoral disease in saliva can be helpful in early diagnosis
