چکیده مقاله:

Fiber reinforced polymers (FRP) due to their brittle behavior, intrinsically have less resistant than the other materials against impact loads. In the present study, the effect of embedded pre-strained SMA wires on the impact behavior of carbon/epoxy laminates was experimentally investigated. Composite specimens with 0%, 2% and 4% pre-strained wires were prepared by hand lay-up method. The hybridization of shape memory alloy wires with composites is not an easy-to-implement process in commercial industries. Therefore, the use of short SMA wires by random distribution on the FRP’s matrix, which is the simplest form of use, was studied in this study too. Two type usage of wire in long and short length was exploited in the middle of laminate. Low velocity impact tests were performed on the SMA reinforced composites and the force-time diagrams were obtained. Comparing the result of specimens with and without embedded SMA wires shows the positive changes in the absorbed energy of the specimens and the location of peak point in force-time diagram. According to the results, the maximum impact load was increased by 14% up to 35% for the specimens with 0.2% SMA long wires and 7% up to 25% for the specimens with short wire in same volume fraction.
