The nitrate ion is considered the most important toxic substances and pollutants of surface and groundwater because of its conversion into a form of nitrite and carcinogenic compounds in the body, which is also harmful to humans and animals even at low concentrations. The existing nitrate in water resources cannot be easily separated due to its high solubility, so the methods used for this purpose are very costly. Absorption is considered as one of the effective methods for eliminating pollutants due to low cost, as well as easy design and operation. In this research, sugarcane bagasse has been used as an adsorbent in nitrate removal. In batch experiments, various effects including pH, surface modification of bagasse and bagasse washing with boiling water were studied and evaluated for nitrate removal. With increasing pH, nitrate absorption decreases by bagasse. On the other hand, with the surface modification of bagasse by HCl, the absorption rate increased from 22% to 34%. Therefore, the maximum absorption rate will be using modified bagasse at acidic pH.
