چکیده

Fore more than half a century now, the United States have played the part formerly devoted to the British as imperial power in the Middle East. Up to the end of the Second World War, Great Britain had been undisputably the "pre-eminent in the Middle East", "its oil companies held major concessions in the Persian Gulf states and the British government wielded effective political domination over them".(1) The United States initially supported the British opsition in the area, and a government official noted in 1945 that: "Our petroleum policy toward the United Kindgom is predicated on a mutual recognition of a very extensive joint interest and upon a control, at least for the moment, of the great bulk of the free Petroleum resources of the world... US-UK agreement upon a broad, forward, looking pattern for the development and utilisation of petroleum resources under the control of nationals of the two countries is of the highest strategic and commercial importance.
