چکیده مقاله:

Background: Psychological factors like stress is considered as risk factors for cardiovascular disease. Elevated plasma interleukin-6 (IL-6) levels have been associated with coronary artery disease (CAD). This study was conducted to determine whether or not perceived stress is associated with higher levels of IL-6 and white blood cell count (WBC) in patients with coronary artery disease.Method: This study was accomplished to evaluate CCU-admitted patients who met the inclusion criteria at Rajaei general hospital, Karaj, Iran. All patients with ≥60% coronary artery stenosis in coronary angiogram were included. Perceived stress and interleukin-6 (IL-6) and coronary arteries stenosis severity were measured using Cohen perceived stress scale, R&D immunological kits for Interleukin-6 (IL-6) and angiography respectively for coronary artery stenosis. Results: Totally 89 patients completed the study. The average age was 55.93 ± 5.87 and 67.4% were male. Higher level of IL-6 and more severity of coronary artery stenosis were significantly associated with higher stress score (P<0.01); Multivariate analysis also confirmed these results. Stress was shown to have a significant, positive relation with WBC count. Conclusion: Stress was associated with higher levels of IL-6 and intensity of coronary arteries stenosis in the present study.
