Investigating the relationship between the type and frequency of foodstuff consumption and the formation of kidney and urinary tract stones: A case-control study

Introduction: Urinary stone disease is the third most common condition affecting the urinary tractand evidence show that the incidence of this disease has increased steadily over the past few decades.The relationship between Urinary stone and food is somewhat known; however, contradictory itemscan be seen in this field. The current study was conducted to investigate the relationship between thetype and frequency of food intake and formation of kidney and urinary tract stones.Materials and Methods: In a case-control study, 127 new patients suffering from urinary stoneswere studied and compared with the same number of healthy people. The control group was matchedwith the subjects in terms of age and gender. Patients with diabetes and acute or chronic renal failurewere excluded from the study. Data were collected using INSKAP-HQ-Tot questionnaire. Chi-squareand Kendall s correlation coefficient were used to analyze the data.Findings: The results of this study indicated that the use of market bread (P = 0.001), red meat (P =0.001), liver (P = 0.008), fish (P = 0.001), different types of canned food (P = 0.002), legumes (P =0.002), butter or cream (P = 0.001) and ice cream (P = 0.003) has a significant relationship with theformation of urinary tract stones.
