Simulation of hydrogen cycle in hydrogenation and dehydrogenation reactors

In this study, a new configuration in which simultaneous production of benzene and cyclohexane takes place is presented. The proposed configuration consists of the two packed bed reactors for the cyclohexane dehydrogenation and benzene hydrogenation processes. In addition, a steam reforming unit is employed to provide the required hydrogen for the hydrogenation plant. Also, the produced benzene in the dehydrogenation plant is transferred to be used as the hydrogenation plant feed. On the other hand, the required cyclohexane is supplied by the benzene hydrogenation process. The governing equations including mass balance, energy balance, and pressure drop are achieved based on a one-dimensional homogeneous mathematical model and the 4th order Runge-Kutta method is applied to solve them. As the result, the temperature and conversion profiles along the reactors are demonstrated for both the hydrogenation and dehydrogenation plants. Afterward, to approve the correctness and validity of the proposed model, the simulation results are compared with the experimental data and acceptable agreement is observed.
