Background and Aim: In recent years, drugs have been identified as emerging contaminants and threatening the environment and human health. Long-term exposure to these compounds can cause changes in microbial ecology, the development of antibiotic resistance, provoking toxic effects on aquatic species and also have on human health through the food chain. Therefore, the assessment of removal of metronidazole from aqueous solutions is important regarding to reduce the negative impacts on the environment and human health. Materials and Methods: In this study, first, the graphene oxide was synthesized then β-CD/GO nano- Composite was produced. We studied the effect of pH, initial antibiotic concentration, contact time, adsorbent dose, and adsorption kinetics and isotherms. Taguchi method to determine the optimum conditions were used. Results: Optimal conditions for the absorption of metronidazole onto β-CD/GO nano- Composite were found at pH 2, amount of adsorbent of 0.4 g/L, contact time 20 min, and Initial concentration 0.25 mg/l. In optimum conditions for absorption of metronidazole removal efficiency was approximately 93.5%. The equilibrium data was fitted by freundlich, in addition the adsorption kinetics agreed well with the pseudo-first-order model. Conclusion: The results of this study showed that the β-CD/GO nano- Composite are considered as a highly efficient and promising adsorbent in water and wastewater treatment systems.
