Effect of the hydro-alcoholic extract of Cinnamomum zeylanicum on castor oilinduced diarrhea in the male mice

Diarrhea, a health problem around the world, a major cause of malnutrition in children under five years and one of the most common causes of death in children. Diarrhea defined from WHO as having more than three times as soft or watery stool or having more stools than normal during the day defined. Diarrhea can lead to severe dehydration and if not treated, the life will be threatened. In this study, the effect of cinnamon (Cinnamomum zeylanicum) extract on diarrhea caused by castor oil has been studied. 42 male mice 28 ± 2 g were randomly divided into six groups; Solvent group (saline), diphenoxylate group (5mg/kg), and four groups receiving cinnamon extract with doses of 100,200,400 and 600 (mg/kg). One hour after administering medications, castor oil at a rate of 2 ml per animal was fed through a catheter oral-gastric. Then repel each animal separately in cages for 4 hours and indices of disposal, animal weight loss, stool water content and percentage of inhibition was determined. Data were analyzed by ANOVA followed by Tukey tests and p<0.05 was considered as significant difference. Both diphenoxylate and cinnamon extract with doses of 400 and 600 (mg/kg) attenuated weight loss percent and stool water content (p<0.05). Also, diphenoxylate and cinnamon extract with doses of 200, 400 and 600 (mg/kg) attenuated percentage of inhibition and frequency of stool (p<0.05). The results show that cinnamon extract, the hypothesis is similar to diphenoxylate in reducing symptoms of osmotic diarrhea and volume of water excreted, so may Cinnamon has anti-diarrhea drug compounds
