چکیده مقاله:

Osteoarthritis, as a degenerative joint disease, is the most common type of arthritis and joint disease in human that can lead to sever pain and patient disability. Mummies are used to treat articular diseases in the south of Iran. Therefore, this study was aimed to evaluate the effect of mummy on knee osteoarthritis in rat. In this study, a total of 42 adult rats were used which were divided in control group, saline negative control, diclofenac positive control and mummification treatment. Mono_iodoacetate was injected into the left knee joint of the rat for induction of disease. Rats were treated for 35 days. To evaluate the flammation status, the diameter of damaged knee wasmeasured daily. According to our results, the application of diclofenac, both in oral and topical forms, could reduce the amount of knee inflammation, but the diameter of the left knee was significantly further in the oral diclofenac treated group compared with healthy group (P<0/05) until the day 26. The use of mimmies, both in oral and topical forms, not only decreased significantly the diameter of the knee joint (P<0/01), but also seemed to affect better than diclofenac. According to the anti-inflammatory effects of mummies on the knee joint of the rat, mummification could be considered as a more suitable drug than diclofenac both in topical and oral forms.
