چکیده مقاله:

The avian digestive tract shows different characteristics in terms of anatomical and histological aspects among various species according to their feeding type and dietary habits. Common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is a member of the family Phasianidae which has recently been considered for its products and biological aspects. This study was conducted to investigate the histology of the stomach in the pheasant. For this purpose, five healthy adult pheasants of both sexes were purchased from the raising farm and after slaughter, tissue sampling was done from their proventriculus and gizzard. The prepared samples were immediately fixed by immersion in 10% buffered formalin. These specimens were studied using a light microscope after processing by routine histological techniques including dehydration, clearing, embedding in paraffin wax, preparation of 7 μm thick sections and staining with hematoxylin-eosin. Results showed that proventriculus lined by simple columnar epithelium and contains many submucosal glands. Each submucosal gland contains a central lumen and simple columnar epithelium. The muscular layer was constituted of an inner circular and an outer longitudinal layers and the outermost layer of the proventriculus was serious. The surface of gizzard or non-secretory part of stomach possessed a layer of rough cuticle. The epithelium of gizzard was the simple columnar type. It was no muscularis mucosae in the gizzard and its muscular layer was composed of smooth muscles.
