Effect of hydro-alcoholic extract of Falcaria vulgaris on the synthesis of collagen in the wound healing of diabetic mice

Diabetes Mellitus is one of the most common diseases in the world which predicts to reach over 360 million diabetics by 2030. More than 75% of diabetics have diabetic ulcers. These may due to that Diabetes can disrupt collagen biosynthesis. In additions, high blood sugar in Diabetics prevents cell proliferation and reduces the production of collagen in the scars that may cause amputation in the organs. The use of herbal remedies for the treatment of various types of ulcers has a long history in many countries, including Iran. The aim of this project is to investigate the restorative properties of Falcaria vulgaris, one of the most important herbs in Iran-flora, in the diabetic wound; especially its role on the synthesis of collagen. In this project, 20 male mice (30-35 g) who were infected with 200 mg/kg streptozotocin (STZ) with intraperitoneal injection have been diabetic( blood glucose above 350 mg / dl) were used in 2 groups: 1-Diabetic mice treated with Eucerin as control group, 2-Diabetic mice treated with F.vulgaris extract as treatment group. Wounds were induced in all mice. The wounds of control and treatment group were treated with Eucerin and hydroalcoholic extract of F.vulgaris, respectively for 6 days. The mice were anesthetized on day 6 and biopsy was performed. To measure collagen, the hydroxyproline index was measured by colorometric method and ELISA. Our results showed that the amount of hydroxyproline as collagen formation index increased in the treated group with extract of F. vulgaris, indicating an increase in the synthesis of collagen. Hydro-alcoholic extract Falcaria vulgaris is effective in diabetic wound healing.
