چکیده

Background and Aim: Metabolic syndrome is considered to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus. Regarding the role of oxidative stress in metabolic syndrome and the role of selenium in cell defense against oxidative stress via involvement in selenium-dependent enzymes, it is assumed that low dietary selenium can be considered a risk factor for metabolic syndrome and its components. The objective of this study was to evaluate the association between dietary selenium intake, as an antioxidant, and metabolic syndrome components in adolescents with metabolic syndrome. Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 42 adolescents (13-19 y) with metabolic syndrome, were selected based on IDF criteria. The basic characteristics, biochemical test results, and dietary intake were collected. The linear regression analysis was used to determine the relationship between dietary selenium intake and metabolic syndrome components. Results: The mean ±SD of selenium intake was 90±.062 μg (83±.067 μg in boys and 94±.058 μg in girls). There was inversely associated with dietary Selenium and waist circumference and positively associated with systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, fasting blood sugar, triglyceride and high density lipoprotein. None of these changes were significant. Conclusion: In this study, there was no significant relationship between dietary selenium and metabolic syndrome components. This lack of significant relationship can be due to the adequate intake of selenium in these adolescents.
