چکیده

Background and Aim: One of the major problems and crises in the Tehran metropolis is the exposure to particulate air pollutants. Since various health studies have shown the effect of Particulate Matter of airborne contaminants as an increase in cardiovascular and oxidative stress, the purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between Particulate Matter of less than 2.5 and 10 microns and the total dietary antioxidant intake with Fasting blood glucose, serum lipids, and hypertension in the elderly living in Tehran. Methods: This study was performed on 226 elderly people. Information including demographic characteristics and frequency of food questionnaires were collected from qualified individuals. Total dietary antioxidant intake was calculated and biochemical tests were performed including fasting blood glucose and serum lipids. Concentrations of Particulate Matter were obtained from the relevant organizations in Tehran province. The mean difference was used for statistical analysis of ANOVA.Results: There was a significant difference between the mean systolic blood pressure in the two groups in the first and second tertile of PM2.5(P=0.44) and pm10(P=0.026). Also, there was a significant difference in diastolic blood pressure between the first and second tertile and second and third tertile of pm10 (P=0.002). However, there was no significant relationship between Particulate Matter and dietary antioxidants with other metabolic biomarkers. Conclusion: The present study showed that exposure of aged people with Particulate Matter of less than 2.5 microns would increase their blood pressure.
