DIETARY INTAKE OF ENERGY AND FIBER IN MS PATIENTS, AND RELATIONSHIP TO DISEASE SEVERITY, SYSTEMIC INFLAMMATION AND ANTHROPOMETRIC INDICES; APPROACH TO PREBIOTICS ROLE

Background and Aim: The goal of this study was to investigate the association between dietary fiber and energy intakes with systemic inflammation, disease severity and anthropometric measurements in MS subjects.Methods: This is a cross-sectional study with four subtypes of 261 MS volunteers that were recruited according to inclusion criteria in Isfahan, Iran (female= 210, male = 51; mean age 38.9 ± 8.3). A 168-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ) and Nutritionist 4 software were used to estimate the amounts of dietary, insoluble, soluble, crude fiber and energy intakes. Serum hs-CRP, Extended Disability Status Scale (EDSS), Height, Weight and Deurenberg Equation were also utilized to evaluate systemic inflammation, disease severity, Body Mass Index (BMI) and Percent Body Fat, respectively.Results: Dietary fiber intake (M=19.9±4.3 gm/day) was negatively correlated to serum hs-CRP (r=-0.416, P< 0.001), EDSS (r=-0.360, P< 0.001), BMI (r=-0.461, P< 0.001) and Percent Body Fat (r=-0.383, P< 0.001); similar relations were observed for three other dietary fiber types (i.e. insoluble, soluble, crude). Furthermore, energy intake (M=2457.6±411.9 kcal/day) was positively correlated to serum hs-CRP (r=0.526, P< 0.001), EDSS (r=0.293, P< 0.001), BMI (r=0.569, P< 0.001) and Percent Body Fat (r=0.493, P< 0.001).on the other hand, carbohydrate intake was more correlated to BMI (r=0.552) and Percent Body Fat (r=0.467) than fat intake (r=0.541, r=0.461; P< 0.001).Conclusion: Hypocaloric and high prebiotic content diet may suppress systemic inflammation and thereby modulate disease severity as well control anthropometric indices. In addition, carbohydrate intake restriction may have more useful effects on anthropometric indices than fat intake restriction.
