چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)- one of the most common chronic liver diseases- is associated with obesity in adults. NAFLD disease in obese people leads to an increase in inflammatory factors. The effect of supplementation of hydroxy citric acid- effective constituent of Garcinia cambojia- on weight loss has been investigated in various studies. Therefore, the present trial was aimed to test the effect of HCA supplement on serum levels of inflammatory factors and liver enzymes in obese patients with NAFLD.Methods: In this randomized controlled clinical trial, 40 obese woman aged 18-50 years with NAFLD (confirmed by ultrasonography) were randomly allocated into two groups: (1) HCA group (received 6 tablets 1125 mg HCA per day plus weight loss recommendation) and (2) control group (only weight loss recommendation) for a 8-week period. At the beginning and end of the study, anthropometric measurements, liver ultrasonography as well as serum levels of inflammatory factors (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6) and liver enzymes (ALT, AST, ALP) were assessed. Results: HCA supplement decreased weight and resulted in a relatively greater non-significant decrease in BMI compared to the control group. HCA supplementation did not have any effect on serum levels of liver enzymes (ALT, ALP, AST), however, increased serum levels of IL-6 and decreased serum TNF- with no effect on serum IL-1 were observed. The changes in inflammatory factors between the groups were statistically significant only for serum levels of IL-6 and TNF- .Conclusion: HCA supplementation seems to cause some changes in the contributing factors of NAFLD
