چکیده

Background and Aim: Regarding to the importance of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of DM disease, the consumption of antioxidants is increased interestingly as a complementary preventive and therapeutic approach for this disease. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of melatonin supplementation on inflammatory and antioxidant parameters in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients. Methods: In this study, 50 T2DM patients were randomly allocated to intervention and control groups. The intervention and control groups received either 6 mg melatonin or placebo (2 tablets) once a day. Serum levels of interleukin-1b (IL-1b), interleukin-6 (IL-6), Malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), superoxide dismutase (SOD), Catalase (CAT), Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) were evaluated in all subjects pre-intervention and post-intervention.Results: Melatonin supplementation significantly increased the serum levels of TAC, SOD, CAT, and GPx in intervention group in compare to baseline (p = 0.02, p = 0.008, p = 0.004 and p = 0.004, respectively). The mean changes of SOD, CAT, and GPx were significantly (p = 0.02, p = 0.04 and p = 0.04, respectively) higher in intervention group in compare to control group (p < 0.05). IL-6, MDA, and IL-1b levels were significantly (p = 0.008, p < 0.001 and p = 0.008) decreased in intervention group after the intervention. The mean changes of IL-6 and MDA were significantly (p = 0.04 and p = 0.008, respectively) lower in intervention group in compare to control group. Conclusion: Melatonin supplementation can be improved inflammatory and antioxidant parameters in T2DM patients
