چکیده مقاله:

Background and Aim: The aim of this study is a comparison between dietary intake and serum levels of some selected carotenoids in lung cancer patients and healthy individuals in Tehran. Methods: Thirty five lung cancer patients of stages 2 and 3 and 33 people without lung cancer have been enrolled in this case control study. Nutritional data was obtained using semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire and 24-hour food recall. The concentration of serum beta-carotene and lycopene were analyzed using HPLC method after they extracted from the samples. Results: Two groups did not differ by the means of age, gender, smoking habits, weight, body mass index, mean daily energy intake, mean fat intake and the percentage of energy from fat to total energy intake. However, the dietary intake of beta-carotene and lycopene in cancer group was higher than control (17143.8 µg versus 8738.1 µg). Also the fruit (329.5 g/day vs. 228.9 g/day) and vegetable (370.8 g/day vs. 243.4 g/day) consumption in cancer group was higher than the control. While serum levels of beta-carotene and lycopene in cancer group was higher than case group (0.9382 µg/dl vs.1.51 µg/dl for beta-carotene and 2.66 µg/dl vs 5.9 µg/dl for lycopene). Conclusion: Despite a higher dietary intake of beta-carotene and lycopene (and their food source) in lung cancer patients, serum beta-carotene and lycopene concentrations were significantly lower than those without lung cancer.
