چکیده

Background and Aim: This study aimed to assess the relationship between dietary patterns (DPs) and Age Related Cataract (ARC) disease. Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 360 participants (120 case and 240 control groups) aged 50-80 years old referred to the ophthalmology clinic of Urmia Imam Khomeini Educational Hospital or Sina Clinic. The participants in control group were matched with case group for sex and age. Usual dietary intake of participants was elicited over last 12 months using a validated 137-item Food Frequency Questionnaire (FFQ). Major DPs were identified by factor analysis, using principal component analysis method. The odds ratios (ORs) for quartiles of patterns score were calculated by multinomial logistic regression. Results: Four major DPs were identified: Western , Healthy , Salty junk food and fast food and High fat dairy . The Western pattern was positively correlated with the occurrence of ARC (OR of 4thquartile comparing to the 1st quartile was 28.63; 95% CI: 9.18-89.32, Ptrend < 0.001). The Healthy pattern was inversely associated with ARC (OR for 4th quartile was 0.13; 95% CI: 0.04-0.42, Ptrend< 0.001). No associations between ARC and the other patterns was observed. Conclusion: The results indicate that, long term consumption of Western DP is significantly associated with increased odds of ARC.
