چکیده مقاله:

Introduction: Astaxanthin is a promising natural carotenoid has been used for antioxidant activity as well as many positive effects, such as anticancer and anti-inflammatory effects.Mehods: The natural red astaxanthin induced by LED lamps in photobioreactor cultures of Haematococcus pluvialis, has been used in this study. Astaxanthin has two hydroxyl groups in its structure used for copolymerization resulted polyesters with varying chemical–physical–mechanical properties. The natural astaxanthin based bioactive polymers and polymer films have been synthesized with various diacids co-monomers of malonic acid and dodecanedioic acid under mild conditions and its physical, chemical and mechanical properties characterized. The effects of synthesized polymers as an antibacterial agents were studied in vitro against clinically relevant pathogens bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis). Antibacterial assays performed with standard MTT test. The effect of astaxanthin polymers on S. aureus and S. epidermidis growth and biofilm formation determined by semi-quantitative adherence assay. Results: The promising results has been obtained specially against Staphylococcus aureus. The results shows significant reduction of both bacterial growth and biofilm formation as a safe clinical relevant antimicrobial agent. In addition it can be used as a coating material for medical devices.125Conclusion: More research is required to evaluate the further applicability of astaxanthin polymers for antibacterial effect on various bacterial infections.
