Role of spirituality and social support in prediction of psychological wellbeing of elderly

Nowadays, the advancement of health science and the expansion of it every year are increasing in the number of elderly people. Therefore, attention and concentration on increasing the psychological well-being of the elderly is considered necessary and essential, through the increase of spirituality and social support it is possible to reach this goal. In this regard, the purpose of this study was to predict psychological well-being based on spirituality and social support in the elderly in Rasht. The present study is descriptive and correlational. The statistical population of this research is all elderly people of Rasht city in 1397. Among them, 160 elderly people were selected as available. For data collection, Parsian and Dunning spirituality questionnaire (2009), Sherborne & Stewart medical outcomes study-social support survey (1991) and short form of Ryff’s scale of Psychological well-being (1989) have been used and data were analyzed by using SPSS-24 software. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis. The results of this study showed that spirituality and social support have a significant relationship with psychological well-being (P <0.01). Beta coefficients of predictive variables indicated that spirituality and social support had a significant predictive value for psychological well-being (P <0.05). The results also showed that spirituality and social support predict a significant degree of variance of psychological well-being. The results of the research show that, the higher the level of spirituality and social support, the psychological well-being of the elderly is significantly increased.
