چکیده مقاله:

Bombay blood group, is a rare blood type in which the red blood cells appear to lack H antigen on their surface and the serum containes IgM antibodies that react with all red blood cells normal ABO phenotypes antigens. Individuals with the rare Bombay phenotype (hh) can only be transfused with autologous blood or blood units from other individuals of Bombay Oh phenotype. It is very important to detect Bombay phenotype individuals in order to avoid any complications during a blood transfusion such as intravascular acute hemolytic reactions, kidney failure and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). In routine ABO an individual with Bombay phenotype shows a blood groupe like an O person. Recent studies from Iranian national rare donor program (INRDP) records during this time (6 years) a total of 88 RBC units were collected from Bombay individuals that were qualified to donate, from 2009 to 2015 revealed that 48 individuals (24 men and 24 women) were identified with Bombay Oh blood group, from which 27 people were blood donors, and the 21 people were suffering from various diseases such as cardiovascular disease (CVD), leukemia, gynecological diseases, pituitary tumor, lumbar disc, diaphragm defects, hernia and accident injuries. The 48 Iranian individuals of Bombay Oh phenotype were from 18 months to 74 years old, and the age average of this group was 40. Among this 48- member-group, 37 individuals were Rh(D)- positive and 11 individuals were Rh(D)- negative. from which 56 units were transfused to patient individuals of this group, and the rest were cryopreserved for further use. In general, it is necessary to perform standard laboratorial tests antibody screening tests using standard kits to detect and report Bombay phenotype individuals before any blood transfusion in hospital blood banks in order to avoid any complications during a blood transfusion. At the blood transfusion center which antibody screening is not performal it is recommended to add O cell control test to the donors’ blood serum grouping tests in the blood transfusion centers to detect problable Bomby blood group donors.
