Comparison of smears quality prepared from refrigerator storaged serous effusion according to preservative material indifferent days

Background:Cytologic evaluation of serous effusions has a major role on clinical diagnosis. There for acytopathologist should can use refrigerated samples for advanced evaluation such as IHC orcell block. But the effects on morphology and diagnostic interpretion of delayed processingof refrigerated effusion have not been well documented.The potential for cellular degeneration has led many laboratories to reflexively fix samplesrather than submit fresh refrigerated samples for cytologic examination. We should knowhowlong we can storage these samples in refrigerator at 40C.Methods and Materials:This was a futural instructive analysis study performed in deportment of cytopathology of AlZahra hospital during 2007-2008. Cases with pleural or peritoneal effusions enrolled in thisstudy.There was 20 samples (5 benign and 15 malignant) that they divided in to 2 section onesection without albumin and another one with albumin (protective factor). And they evaluateat specific 6 days (1-3-6-9-12 and 15) About their morphologic cells.Results:Mean age of parities was 60.3±11.9. 75 percent was malignant and 15 percent benign.According to t-paired exam large number of samples after 6 and were preserved well andsamples with albumin were interpretable after about 6 to 9 days in both malignant and benignsamples.Conclusion:The morphology of cytologic preparation was preserved and inter pretable after 6 days andwe can t preserved effusions above 1 weak in this our situation. And if we add Albumin as aprotective factor we can preserved more time further.
