چکیده مقاله:

IntroductionPreviously it has been found that alternating extremely low frequency magnetic fields (ELFEMF) with parameters used in therapy in humans influence carbohydrate metabolism aswell as endocrine and exocrine function of the pancreas. Besides, it is reported that exposureto alternating magnetic field has no effect on serum concentrations of insulin and glucose ofexperimental animals Since it is difficult to compare the studies evaluating the influence ofexposure to ELFEMF on pancreatic islet function because of different research methods, andthere are no reports in the published works concerning the effect of prolonged exposure toEMF on glucagon secretion, the present study was designed to evaluate the influence of longtermexposure to ELFEMF on the endocrine secretory function and structure of pancreas inrats.Materials and methods:Forty five rats in 3 groups include: group 1 or control group were kept in normal conditionsof animal room, group 2 or exposed for 135 days and under 50 Hz, 1 mT (emitted fromsolenoid) for 24 h daily, and group 3 or sham group were kept in conditions similar to thegroup 2 except in off solenoid. In final, blood samples collected for determine of the insulin, glucagon and glucose concentration in the plasma. The pancreas was examined using lightmicroscopy.Result:showed that in EMF exposed group insulin level was increased which was associated withincreased size of pancreatic islets and glucose level was decreased (P<0.001), but glucagonlevel did not significantly change. In conclusion, long term exposure to EMF impacts insulinsecretion by influencing the structure of pancreas.
