< p>  Detailed understanding of wear processes is required to improve the wear resistance and lifetime of machine components. This can be achieved by studying wear depths at the micro and nano-level. A complementary method for the analysis of wear processes is by means of numerical simulations. Atomic force microscopy (AFM) is used to measure surface topographies of smooth and rough steel balls with high precision. A computationally efficient model of evolution of contact and wear is developed for the pin-on-disc configuration. For evaluation of wear of balls, a subroutine which uses variational principle in which the contact pressure distribution are those which minimize the total complementary potential energy is used. The pressure profile generated can then be used to calculate wear using Archard s wear equation. Furthermore, wear model developed by taking into account the real surface topographies of the experimental setup which enables us to predict realistic wear. Finally, the analysis has been done using different time steps to see effect of time resolution.< /p>
