چکیده

Conventional wisdom has it the warp and woof of human history is the succession of human and social conflicts punctuated by wars and other forms of violence. It is only temporarily that swords are shielded and guns are silent. This view of unfolding of human affairs proves true if we cast an eye on blood-stained history pages of past hundred years. The protracted Arab-Israeli conflict has ever remained a stumbling block in progress of Middle East peace process. Unfortunately this problem remains as intractable today as it was six decades ago. Rather in many respects it has become more complex and intricate. With this perspective the present study aims at giving an insight into multifarious aspects of the problem. This paper will trace historical roots of Arab-Israeli conflict and state the fundamental thorny issues bedeviling the relations of the disputants. I'll focus in the paper on the development of various dimensions of conflict keeping in view the implications of influence exerted by great powers. Different initiatives were undertaken at different times to bring peace to the strife-torn region but no significant breakthrough could be achieved. Therefore a detailed examination of various peace efforts will be made identifying the bottlenecks in resolution of the conflict. It will be argued how the recent eruption of Israel-Hamas conflict in Gaza taking a heavy toll on hapless Palestinians presses upon the importance to seek immediate and durable solution to the problem. Taking unfolding demographic situation in the region into consideration, the significance of two-state solution will be highlighted in conclusion.
