Breast cancer is the most common malignant disease in women of the world and novel therapeutic strategies is needed to cure and control more accurate and effective.Small interfering RNA (siRNA) is RNA duplexes of 18–23 nucleotides with approximately two-three nucleotide overhangs. SiRNAs has the advantage to affect the activity of the target gene very specific by a phenomenon known as RNA interference (RNAi), almost without cross reactivity to any other process. Hence, siRNAs can be good therapeutic agents for genetic based diseases such as cancer. Systemic delivery of naked siRNA has extensive disadvantages such as enzymatic degradation, over renal clearance, interaction with blood compounds, activation of the immune system and the inefficient uptake by target cells. To overcome these problems, various carriers and vehicles have been introduced and proved effective and useful. In this manner, nanosystems which are nanostructured entities with tunable size, shape, and surface, as well asbiological behavior, provide an ideal opportunity to modify current treatment approaches in a substantial way. Gold nanoparticles (or in generally term Au-based nano delivery systems) due to wide shapes, unique properties, easy synthesis, functionalization and identification, have a wide range of applications in biology and medicine. In this review, we introduced and described most recent scientific findings in the field of gold-based nano delivery systems for siRNA transfection into breast cancer cell lines.
