To determine the prognostic factors in survival of patients with colorectal cancer in an iranian population during 2001-2007 using parametric survival regression (weibull model)

Colorectal cancer is a common and lethal disease with a different incidence rate in different parts of the world which is taken into account as the third cause of cancer-related deaths. Assessment of factorswhich affect this cancer is important for prolonging the patient survival. So the aim of this study is to estimate survival probability and to determine of its related risk factors. In the present study, using parametric weibull model, factors influencing survival of patients with colorectal cancer were evaluated. This study is conducted on medical records of 1127 patients with colorectal cancer referred toTaleghani Medical and Training Center of Tehran between 2001 and 2007 and were definitely diagnosed with cancer, pathologically. parametric weibull model was fitted. All calculations were carriedout using STATA software version 12, at the 0.05 level of significance. from a total of 1127 patients studied in this research, there were 690 men and 437 women. According to the non-parametric Kaplan-Meier method, chances of surviving for 1,3, 5, and 7 years were 91.16, 73.20, 61.00, and 54.94, respectively. The results of fitting model weibull showed that Body Mass Index, tumor grade, tumor size, and spread to lymph nodes, were the factors affecting survival time. Our results showed that should be considered the most important prognostic factors such as Body Mass Index, tumor grade, tumor size, and spread to lymph nodes in colorectal cancer patients. Therefore, early detection of cancer using screening programs can improve survival in such patients
