Evaluation of antimicrobial activity of Caryophyllus aromaticus, Origanum majorana, and Cymbopogon citratus Essential Oils by disk diffusion method

Essential oils have antimicrobial properties that can be used as effective substitutes in synthetic additives. The purpose of this study was to determine the antimicrobial properties of Caryophyllus aromaticus, Origanum majorana, and Cymbopogon citratus Essential Oils by disk diffusion method. Three gram-positive bacteria (Listeria monocytogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus) and two gram-negative bacteria (Escherichia coli O157:H7 and Salmonella typhimurium) were tested by disk diffusion assay. The results showed the antimicrobial activities of all three Essential Oils while Origanum majorana was more effective than Caryophyllus aromaticus and Cymbopogon citrates. Also gram-negative bacteria were more resistant than gram-positive bacteria.
